The agriculture-friendly climate of the
island, influences the quality of the productions, but differs
every year. From the climatic point of view, Sicily is a
Continent, since climate varies notably from zone to zone
within its viticultural territory; therefore the island
can be divided into four areas: West-central, Southeast,
Northeast - Etna and the small islands. The major types
of soil in these areas are: sandy, clayey, calcareous, mixed.
Today there are 136.000 hectares of vineyard in Sicily,
equivalent to 17% of the national landmass, 70% of which
is constituted of white berry grapes and 30 %, of red berry
grapes; the production amounts to 5.000.000 hectolitres,
200.000 of which are DCO and 1.500.000 IGT; 90% of the product
is based on local varieties, such as Grecanico, Inzolia,
Abvola Black, Nerello Mascalese, the rest international.

The wine-producing panorama is very dynamic and about 200
professional and competitive bottling companies, capable
of harmonising the varied choices, modern winemaking techniques
and the corporate image culture, represent it.
